James “Jimmy” Gula, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, teacher, and friend, passed away surrounded by family and love. He was the devoted husband of Teresa Gula for 51 years, their bond serving as a testament to love, partnership, and shared memories. Together, they raised four children: James Gula and his wife Amy, Alison Brodginski and her husband Jerome, John Gula and his wife Michelle, and David Gula and his wife Mary. He was also the proud grandfather of nine grandchildren: Jacob, Lauren, Dawson, Chelsea, Vanessa, Jack, Joey, Ben, and Emma, each of whom brought him immense joy. He is survived by his brother John Gula and his wife Mary. Along with many nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his parents John and Verna Gula.
Jim had a distinguished career as an English and literature teacher, where he touched countless lives, not only in the classroom but also through his involvement in extracurricular activities. His students will always remember him as someone who was dedicated both inside and outside of the classroom. Whether it was building homecoming floats in his driveway or organizing multiple ski trips, Jim had a commitment to guide students in unforgettable experiences. With every experience having his wife Teresa at his side.
A proud veteran, Jim served in the U.S. Navy for over 22 years, sharing stories from his time in Iceland with his children and grandchildren. His service to his country was an essential part of who he was, and he brought those experiences to life with humor and insight, making even the coldest tales of Iceland warm and engaging.
Jim was a gifted drummer, performing in bands at the age of 14. His love for music stayed with him throughout his life, most recently as he jammed with his grandchildren this past summer. His passion for music was just one example of his zest for life, showing that joy could be found in every beat, every moment.
Those who knew Jim will remember him for his selfless nature and laid-back approach to life. Despite his calm demeanor, he was one of the hardest-working people you could meet, showing us all the value of integrity, honesty, and enjoying the journey. He was the heart of his family and social circles, always reminding everyone of the importance of togetherness, love, and laughter. His sense of humor, warm smile, and kind-hearted spirit will be deeply missed.
In this challenging time, we are comforted knowing that his legacy will continue to live on through his family, friends, and the countless students and lives he touched. His wisdom, kindness, and love will forever shape the lives of those fortunate enough to have known him.
As one of his favorite authors, Robert Frost, wrote:
“In three words I can sum up everything I’ve learned about life: It goes on.”
Jim’s life was a beautiful testament to those words.
Rest in peace. You will live on in all of us.
